To end the year, TheFlow decided to release an update to his famous VitaShell utility that virtually everybody that has a taiHEN-enabed device uses. This update brings along an important feature which makes VitaShell much more powerful and could save you lots of time!
What is VitaShell?
VitaShell is the most popular file manager for the PSVita that’s installed on almost all taiHEN/HENkaku-enabled PSVita/PSTV systems in one way or another. It was originally released for Rejuvinate back in 2015 when it won the Revitalize contest on Wololo.
When HENkaku was released, it was immediately ported in the form of MolecularShell but then it became VitaShell again since it stopped being bundled with taiHEN. VitaShell has lots of features such as:
- The ability to cut/copy/paste files and folders
- Theme support
- Ability to set up an FTP server to copy or grab files to/from your device. You can also use it to turn your Vita into a USB mass storage device!
- Ability to browse and copy files between different partitions (ux0,ur0, uma0 and more).
- Many more features such as a picture viewer, music player, archive opener etc…
What got added/updated in the VitaShell 1.77 Beta?
VitaShell 1.77 Beta brings about the following:
- Support for more archive types such as 7z, tar, tar.gz, tar.bz2 and much more.
- Probably some bug fixes because every release has those! There’s no real change log except a Twitter post as of now.
As you can see, this update brings along a major convenience for users who regularly use DownloadEnabler to grab files off the internet or those who have a large SD card and have large game collections that
contain many different archive formats.
This update also puts to rest my small ‘7zShell’ tweak since this update has 7z extracting functionality built-in so you should remove 7zShell after the final 1.77 release comes out.
Conclusion
To get this beta version, simply download the VPK from the link below and copy it to your PSVita via FTP/USB. You must install it via MolecularShell because when I tried installing it from VitaShell, I just got an error!
Be sure to test out the new archiving abilities with different file formats and report any bugs to TheFlow on GitHub since this is a beta release after all!

N.B: Make sure to download the VPK from a trusted source since malware for the Vita does exist and this homebrew, quite obviously, requires unsafe permissions. The VPK can’t be found on GitHub (not an official release) or VitaDB so only follow the link given in this article or new ones from TheFlow.
