Less than 2 weeks ago, Rinnegatamante stated that he started working on VitaGL, a hardware accelerated implementation of OpenGL for the Vita. Fortunately, with lots of work, he progressed a lot and he even has something exciting to show us.
What is VitaGL?
VitaGL is Rinnegatamante’s GPU-accelerated implementation of OpenGL for the PSVita/PSTV. This means that PSVita homebrew will be able to pass the last hurdle which is hardware graphics acceleration and this means more spectecular homebrew can be ported/developed to/for it. The main types of homebrew you can expect are:
- HW rendered ports of open-source titles such as zDoom/Zandronum, Quake 3 and more.
- Updates to existing homebrew such as VitaQuake to include a hardware accelerated renderer. This means that you’ll get better frame-rates and picture quality.
- Emulators with 3D hardware acceleration. This could make the long-awaited N64 emulator for the PSVita possible!
What about Rinnegatamante’s recent work on VitaQuake?
In the past couple of days since my article on VitaGL, Rinnegatamante has followed up on his promise of porting the ProQuake glQuake renderer to VitaQuake. He’s been able to achieve the following:
- Getting the game to actually compile and load. He first got the main menu to work.
- Then, he was able to get in-game but it looked like a Minecraft version of Quake! After that, he also fixed up more things so that textures get displayed properly.
- While weapons are still buggy, he’s been able to display dynamic lights which means that Quake on the Vita will look even better!
Now, a fix for lightmaps and underwater view, optimised shaders and drawing calls are required for VitaQuake to be updated with the glQuake renderer!
