As Rinnegatamante seems to really like working on the PSVita, he not only created VitaGL to allow for a smoother Quake I experience on the Vita but he also keeps updating the port. This time, VitaQuake has been updated to version 2.8, an update that brings about some great new features and many fixes!

What is VitaQuake?

VitaQuake 2.5 with GPU acceleration released

Notice the great visuals!

VitaQuake is a port of the original Quake engine for the PSVita/PSTV that was created by Rinnegatamante back in the Rejuvenate days. Before version 2.5, all rendering was done in software but with version 2.5, the game started being rendered through the glQuake renderer via VitaGL. In other words, the game got 3D hardware acceleration, something never seen before in Vita homebrew bar for some demos.

Thanks to VitaGL, VitaQuake not only runs at an almost constant 60FPS but also looks great thanks to it running at the Vita’s native resolution (960×544), dynamic lights, shadows and much more.

What got changed/updated in version 2.8?

VitaQuake version 2.8 brings about the following:

  • Colored lights are now supported – This makes the game look even more pleasing!
  • Underwater shadows were fixed.
  • The renderer itself got many bug fixes so that the game could be accurately rendered without any issues.
  • The icon and start-up banner got updated thanks to work by Ch3lin
  • The analogue sticks’ accurarcy was increased when aimining and deadzone was improved thanks to work by rsn8887
  • Other bug fixes and improvements

    Coloured lights are now supported!

As you can see, this update makes the game even better so that you could play VitaQuake at 60FPS without any issues! Thanks to Rinnegatamante’s work, the Vita’s best FPS game (personal opinion) is now mostly bug free and can be made to look even more stunning than ever before with coloured lights.

How do I get it?

To get VitaQuake, simply open VHBB and install it from there as it’s available on VitaDB. By downloading it from VHBB, you also get the data files from the shareware version so you can start playing straight away! You may also add your own legitimate data files of the full game if you wish to play through all of the game on your Vita.

If you encounter any issues, just report them to Rinnegatamante on the link below!
