Hacking a PS Vita with the HENlo exploit

A few days ago, hacker TheFloW released HENlo, an exploit chain for the PS Vita, compatible up to firmware 3.74 (the latest at the time of writing).

I initially stated that this release wouldn’t be super useful to end users, considering that we already have a way to install Custom Firmware on the latest Vita versions. But it was pointed out to me that this new exploit makes the whole process much easier compared to h-encore², as it doesn’t require to go through the Content Manager Assistant, or even have a PSN account (both of which are required with the current method). What’s more, everything can be done directly from the Vita, without going through a PC.

The current implementations of the hack are still in the “testing phase”, so we’re not updating our guide just yet, but it’s very likely HENlo will become the favorite way to run Henkaku (Vita Homebrew enabler) moving forward. And to be honest, these implementations seem to be running fine.

For those of you who want to hack their PS vita and are looking for a foolproof guide, I still recommend you follow to our Vita Custom Firmware guide, it remains valid, but we might update it ultimately to use HENlo instead of h-encore².

For those of you looking to test HENlo in order to install HENkaku on Firmware 3.74, two different implementations currently exist. In both cases, all you have to do is point your PS Vita browser to the corresponding url. That is, either:

SKGleba‘s implementation.

OR

Yoti‘s implementation.

Again, both these implementations are fully functional and will let you run HENkaku on your PS Vita, by selecting “install Henkaku” once the menu is displayed. From there, you can install Vitashell, (in SKGleba’s implementation, select VitaDeploy, then from VitaDeploy,s “app downloader” you can install Vitashell), then start installing essential applications.

Enjoy your newly hacked console!

PS Vita release: VitaShell 2.05 by Yoti

Scene developer Yoti has released an update to his fork of VitaShell today. This is (in part) to celebrate the anniversary of the Henkaku PS Vita hack, which was released exactly 8 years ago today.

It’s been more than 2 years since the last update for VitaShell, and, to be honest, it’s not like a lot is needed at this point: VitaShell does what it needs, and has very few issues that I know of. This update brings some QoL changes though, so if you’re a user of VitaShell (which you probably are if you have a hacked PS Vita), then you might want to update.

What is VitaShell for PS Vita?

VitaShell is the most popular homebrew utility for the PSVita since it’s installed on almost every HENkaku-enabled PSVita/PSTV. It was originally developed by TheFloW  and it won the PS Vita Revitalize competition as it was determined “Best homebrew” back in 2015. Now, it’s become a Swiss Army knife for the PSVita since it can do many things such as:

  • Install packages (including homebrew)
  • Let you start an FTP server to copy files to your Vita. You may also use it to copy files to your Vita via USB from your computer.
  • Read QR codes and even install VPKs from them if they lead to one.
  • Sort/Delete/Create files and folders.
  • Extract and create ZIP files.
  • Read and display various files such as music files (MP3), pictures, SFO files and much more.
  • Use themes for maximum customization
  • Many other features!

What’s new in VitaShell 2.05

From the changelog:

  • Use this fork repo to check for a newer versions. [note from wololo: this means that moving forward Yoti’s releases will check for updates on Yoti’s fork github rather than the original from TheFloW. Probably a good idea considering TheFloW hasn’t updated the original tool in years]
  • Added ability to refresh PSP games. Thanks to KuromeSan.

Download and install VitaShell 2.05

Important note from the developer: DO NOT try to install new VitaShell.vpk from VitaShell itself! Use another file manager like molecularShell or ONEMenu. Or replace eboot.bin file inside ux0:app/VITASHELL/ directory with new one.

You can download VitaShelll 2.05 from Yoti’s github here.
